In the end, that is the truth of it. Shows are broken down to what viewers want and no longer on showrunners telling a story with honest, sensible progression from point A to point B and viewers being relegated as nothing more than spectators. How many shows have done an about turn due to fan service? I think it's largely due the interactive nature of the internet and the connections facilitated between shows and the fans.
I miss the days when shipping referred to large boats sailing the open seas. I find myself enjoying shows that aren't relationship based because it's simpler that way. For example, as much as I love the AoS show, I preferred it when Fitzsimmons, Philinda, weren't a thing. Sometimes a show just needs to stick to a formula that works and Nick's love life has never been it, not in all these seasons.
Juliette deserved to live her own life, not dictated to by being tethered to Nick's side even when he put her life in danger constantly. Any woman as smart as she was would have long left him and Adalind has been reduced to even worse than Juliette in her role as Nick's girlfriend. These are/were smart women who deserved better than the show provided for them.
