Okay, then for the story to work, either the tree just began killing or there’s been years of unexplained deaths in that area that police chalked up to wild animal attacks and random abductions/murders. And, family members didn’t make enough noise about their loved ones missing or murdered that forced the police to respond proactively.
Even if Nick or Hank couldn’t see the tree actually attack and kill the other, the survivor would know his partner was killed while investigating the crime scene but be unable to explain how it happened. I don’t see that as acceptable in a report - unless his captain is a Wesen who tweaks the report and cautions the surviving officer of the personal & career risk of further investigation.
