I mistakenly thought Kelly had the coins when her husband and friend were killed, and since they thought the friend was Kelly, she decided on a covert life. If they thought they had killed her, then her son would be safer because it was reasonable that the aunt would step in to care for him. I think we're generally more in agreement than not.
IMO Aunt Maria also ways lived as grimm. She was not aware of the fact you could wear eyeglasses to hide yourself from wesen so if a wesen woged near her she was always was at risk of an attack and librarian job then could not be done remotely. Grimms can raise one child somewhat safely by moving, change names and dropping boyfriends but it takes some sacrifices. Kelly wanted to destroy the coins and not being able to find them is what made it impossible to be a parent not being an some what active grimm. Nick found the coins before his mom which showed her strategy did not work.
Women characters do not have to be having sex with the lead to be important to the story.
