Taking my lead from Starfury's example, I can see the writers describing his search as being something of a spiritual quest, it's always gratifying to see a person achieve self-enlightenment.
Kelly has told Nick the families were trying to gain world power, he knows why the keys were forged, and there have been many attempts on his life. He shouldn't have to have a brick wall fall on his head to see that this opponent is stepping up the game and he needs to form some affiliations to strengthen his ability to fight them. No reason why the two concepts couldn't be converged.
I had in mind a 'reaching out' kind of connection with the Resistance at first, though. A loose alliance, like that. As wfmyers1207 says, Kelly's work with them, and Renard's link to him, should give Nick the credentials to establish discussions. The Captain should give Nick the whole skinny on what his ultimate plan is also, if he has one. (At some point, the powerful Wesen Council must be brought into the fold, too.) There has been much unilateral activity by groups that share essentially the same aim. Seems all could advance their cause if the left hand knew what the right was doing. The preliminary activities that would eventually lead to acting together against a common enemy would be enough for the present, because the ultimate confrontation (which to me means war ) will probably not occur until near the end of the show's run.
