He went to Catherine over Juliette's coma because he knew if anything happened to Nick's girlfriend, nothing would tie Nick to Portland. A lackey isn't free to come and go and do as they pleased. They followed orders and Nick didn't follow Renard's orders, not once, and towards the end of the show, he barely followed the state's as he adhered to his Grimm tendencies more and more.
This whole Nick being Renard's lackey thing is baffling. Everyone here has made great points and gone in-depth on why that is the furthest thing from the truth but we don't even need to go that far. If Nick were truly Renard's lackey, he could've just told Nick to hand his key over to him rather than go through all this trouble of using Adalind and later searching for the key himself. Why would Renard do all of that if Nick was just a lackey? And why would Nick have a few brawls with Renard over the course of the show if he were just his lackey?
As for the topic, I would've liked to see the origins of Grimms and how they came to be at the end. I always thought that their origin could possibly be tied to Hexenbiests in some way and it would've been fascinating if they had some common origin or at least worked together in the past before they had a falling out and became mortal enemies.
