Ripper infected him because he died and his mother reversed his death through dark magic or whatever it's referred to on this show. I don't think there's any philosophical reason behind the possession. Jack was an opportunistic spirit who hitched a ride from whatever dark place Renard's spirit had gone to.
I think Renard saw no value in relationships probably because of how his father handled his relationship with his mother. Renard is the product of an affair. His father didn't outwardly protect him or his mother from the queen's wrath. He probably grew up knowing how little Frederick actually felt for his mother, the most important person in his life.that had to affect him somehow. Renard loves his mother (likely hated his father) but he's had bad examples of meaningful loving relationships. He has had no reason to seek relationships beyond a good romp in bed.
Maybe he's capable of loving a woman in a non selfish, self serving way outside of his mother and daughter, unfortunately we have never had a chance to meet that Renard.
