Home prices here being what they have been the past 10 years, there have been very few people who could afford to buy a house who have concluded it wasn't in their best interest.
Nick's comment to Adalind about not thinking he was going to be in the house very long makes me wonder if he might have bought it intending to flip it in a few years. Maybe it was a foreclosure, which might explain how a detective with a salary in the $60k range - or for that matter, a detective and a veterinarian making roughly the same together - own a house in one of Portland's hottest neighborhoods that would cost twice what they could ever hope to pay.
