Yes, I known families that see jail as their free mental health service or do not know how to make these requests but I hope more learn about avoiding jail. US is the only country in the world where such a large percentage of the mentally ill are in prison and often in prisons just for the mentally ill.Actually that is not true. Most people in jail are not mentally ill. What you will find will get you put in jail faster is a diffident attitude. Because the cops can hold you fro 72 hours for no reason at all They will sweep the neighbor hood on Thursday. Knowing you wont get out till Monday. Sure a lawyer could get you out immediately. But being poor you can't afford a lawyer and one can not be appointed until you are charged. You would be surprised how many picked up this way then gain additional charges while in jail. A lot of these charges come from jailers aggravating inmates knowing that are not going to back down. That is the same tactics police use to make an arrest.
MarylikesGrimm so many of you assumptions come from how people on the outside or people with money view the system. If you don't have money something as simple as a jaywalking ticket can get you weeks in jail. Weeks of waiting for your day in court.
Like you made the assumption the mentally ill use jail like a mental health service. Problem is dealing with the mentally ill is costly. For one the system protects the mentally ill from a lot of the practices that they use to incarcerate the poor. It is the poor that make up the most of the jail populations.
A large part of increase in jail population for the last fews decades is the mentally ill who no longer go to mental institutions. Of course, minor drugs charges, minimum sentences and court fees are also driving up the population as well. I see you are not aware the fact we have prisons which only have the poor mentally ill in them that no where else would be in prison.
In Grimm we never see how Nick treats the mentally ill since everything is treated like it is wesen related.
