This is the show playing up the Grimm side to the detriment of the law enforcement side. As a detective, Nick should have instinctively followed the evidence with Hank, Wu, and Renard expecting it as the next logical step. Learning the content of the hard drive wouldn’t have blown the later reveal of Renard choosing to join BC, only possibilities not yet confirmed. The only thing further investigation would have established was that BC was interested in Renard for some reason and he would have honestly not known why.
But then, what would be the point of HW, Meisner, and Eve had the police uncovered who some of the main BC players were in Portland? G & K had to give them something to do.
