I just think it has something to do with seizing power. Why come to Portland unless there is something this hoard wants there. Even if the host is comprised of blood-thirsty types in it for the kill, they must have leaders - who usually have an agenda. If they have been planning this move for some time, maybe they want to make Portland a base of operations of sorts. It's also possible that other uprisings will be coordinated with this one in other places around the world (maybe places where known WC liasons reside). They are so organized, with a cryptic battle cry and a creepy sigil, they are as much a formalized group as the Resistance.
So what's in Portland that we have seen in the past that has attracted those who would have them for their own? There's the Grimms, the keys, a WC liason, and a man who although his birth isn't sanctioned by marriage, is clearly in line for the throne of one of the Royal houses. But all those reasons don't add up to making Portland a target for this kind of assault. In fact, they would be more likely secured by stealth and small black-op kinds of strategies.
A long while back, I wrote something about hoping that Portland wasn't a portal, or a mystical place that wesen were drawn to. But maybe it is.
I'm crossing my fingers that this is something that will play out in the next couple of episodes because Nick will need the support of as much of the wesen community as he can get down the line.
