Comes a point, I think when folks should just let it rest in peace and move on to something original. Goes back to that whole franchise thing I talked about on another thread. Eventually, its just been done to death.
I don't disagree that the show had become stale, Voyager was a travesty, had potential but Rick Berman the show runner should have have been taken out back and put out of my misery. I still can't decide if I liked or loathed Enterprise, it occasionally had its moments but like most Trek series suffered from resetitis. Only DS9 allowed characters to truly change over the course of their adventures.
However, there is a show that I watch over here in the UK that had its own issues, which had a period to lie dormant and came back kicking and screaming. I speak of Dr Who, which by the time of its demise in the mid 1980's was awful, but since its return in the late 2000's has generally kicked ass. This is mainly down to having a series of show runners that love the show and have a respect for the canon, this is not to say they are unwilling to play fast and loose to ensure we get fun and exciting adventures when necessary, but try to maintain a consistency in their approach to the characters, both friend a foe alike.
TV Trek has been gone for a long time now and with the Universe reset you could revisit the original crew of the enterprise or take the universe forward beyond what has been seen on the show. Take the show truly dark, have the Federation destroyed a whispered myth of the survivors on Earth and beyond. A dominant race that has taken over the Alpha Quadrant but also spans the entire Galaxy that makes the Borg look like a bunch of kindergarten teachers. And then throw in a time wrecked (how's about the classic failed experiment on a new super warp drive) Federation crew, that is from the distant past, from the peak of the Federation (great new experimental ship, shiny ), that becomes the focus for the rebellion against the galactic overlords. You get the bright and shiny principles of Star Fleet having to meet with the practicalities of War, terrorism and counter intelligence all the fun stuff that fighting a superior enemies entails, you get to see what your characters have to sacrifice to achieve their goals. I know die hard Trek fans will bleat that this isn't Star Trek, but I always thought the show was at its best when it asked the hard questions. In our current World wouldn't exploring War in all its forms and the questions involved be the true Trek.
