This is a thread I haven't posted on for a while. It so happens that this evening I was rewatching "Endangered" from season 2.
(I know I'm jumping ahead of the season 2 rewatch campaign, sue me!)
This is the episode where Nick tells Monroe about, and shows him, the key for the first time. When I watched this episode before, I concentrated on the whole 'map from the Black Forest' angle. I neglected something Monroe said about the key perhaps being part of a 'ward lock'. Now there are different interpretations for that. A ward lock could be simply the old fashioned type of lock that a skeleton key was used to open. Or, a ward lock could be something that uses multiple barriers.
Up till now, I assumed that the keys unlocked a single object, like a strongbox or door, but that you needed all seven keys at once. Similar to the idea of having to turn two keys simultaneously to activate a missile system. But, what if there are seven barriers you have to get past? Each key unlocking one, and only one, barrier?
The key maps may show someone where the 'hidden whatever' is, but they don't give you instructions on which order the keys are to be used to get past the 7 barriers. This may be something Nick's crew have to figure out themselves because the clues has been lost over the centuries, or perhaps, it is concealed on the key maps but takes some real 'Holmesian' deduction to figure out.
The whole point being, if you try to use key #4 to get past barrier #3, then God help you, because some really nasty 'Indiana Jones' style booby trap is going to be activated!
What do you folks think? Does this idea have merit?
