What if what is hidden is. . . . nothing?
The whole thing was a giant 'MacGuffin' to keep the Royals chasing their tails---thus diverting their energies from projects that might create major threats? And, if in wherever whatever it might be is supposed to be hidden has clues that it might have been moved elsewhere?
When the Romans conquered Jerusalem, the general strode into the Sanctum Sanctorum to see what the Jews had been hiding there all those centuries, taking such great pains to be sure no Gentile ever even came near it, and found. . .nothing. This might be the same thing.
