Now, Nick stated that the tunnel wasn't on any city plans and that it probably dated back to the Prohibition Era. He also mentioned something about a "shanghai tunnel". Now, for those of you who may not know, "shanghaing" was when sailors were kidnapped and woke up on a ship at sea and found themselves a new happy home!!
More likely though, if it goes back to Prohibition and the tunnel probably led to a dock where liquor could be unloaded and taken to the factory unseen by unfriendly Federal types.
Actually, neither function precludes the other!
More likely the show intends for this to simply be a bolt hole for our happy little Grimm family, one that Black Claw can't possibly know about. So, if Black Claw does find the Grimm Lair, then they already have the plot device needed for them to get out.
It would also make another good means of egress and ingress to the Grimm Lair so the Grimm crew can come and go with less chance of being made by unfriendly types.
considering the warehouse has steel shutters, someone used it as a fortress. The show has made the point that a lot of the conflicts in history where actually wesen related. Lets consider the people being shanghaied where wesen and the tunnel and door is where they keep the wesen before they shipped them out. It was the Grimm solution at the time instead of cutting of their heads. It would make it ironic that Nick was not the only Grimm who sought to find a more humane way of handling wesen.
