The True Cross wouldn't have been cut up. The nails used were metallic and the Patriarch would have fled the City with such Holy Relics.
The Spear of Destiny wouldn't have been cut up either.
This is going to be a relic picked up by the seven unawares. One of their number may have been killed and the stick restored life. The soldiers who were nearby saw this and tried to take it off the Knights. They had no choice but to kill all the soldiers and realised what they held was too dangerous to be allowed to remain in circulation. They may have used it to prolong their lives.
As to what it is: Christ brought Lazarus back to life. So in the Grimm world he used a staff that he later gave to the Apostle Peter. That got planted outside Rome. Found again after Belisarious retook Rome for the Empire and the staff was taken back to the City. It was cut up. That would mean there are other pieces to be found to make the whole staff.
Serieswise there is now a means to bring Nick back to life after not-Juliette kills him in the season finale.
