It's because they still haven't accepted that the show's name, "Grimm," means that Nick's primary role is that of a Grimm and his job as a Portland cop is just his "secret identity."
I've said before that this could have made for an interesting arc. Nick stated outright that the badge was getting in the way of finding Monroe during the Wesenrein. Nick, Renard, Hank, and Wu tossed their badges in the trunk before going to confront the Wesenrein. Those made for some pretty great scenes.
The problem is this was never really revisited. I don't have a problem with Nick being a Grimm and a cop but I think it would only be logical if Nick took some time to decide if he should stay on the force. Being on the force does give him info he normally wouldn't have, reminds me of Dexter, but so did HW. It seemed like he took more of a liking to the way HW handled business mainly because they knew what was really going on and were willing to do what they felt was necessary. There's a certain lack of awareness that bothers me more than Nick being a cop.
