That's not what he's saying. He's saying that Kelly stayed away because she didn't want to lead anyone who may have been after her to Marie.
As for Marie, I thought she went to Nick because she was at death's door and figured that Nick might've just awaken his sight. She wanted to let him know that everything he was seeing was real. There was also the case of her wanting to pass down the trailer with all of its contents and the keys to him because there was nobody else she could've given it to and that was of the utmost importance.
I know what he's saying and I'm saying I disagree. From what I gathered, Marie and Nick were keeping in contact with one another. I assume this from the questions he asks her about her cancer. Even if her visit had to do with whether Nick was becoming a grimm or not, the fact remains. Marie came to see him.
In reality, his mother should be the one looking out to see if the legacy has passed on to him. Instead, she doesn't bother to show up and doesn't even send word via her sister to let him know she's alive.
The most that can be said for Kelly is that she showed up coincidentally at the same time as the Coins of Zaknthos. If Kelly was really all that concerned about who might be following her, would she really attempt to show up at the same time as something she was once the guardian of? I highly doubt it.
The same thing happens when the plans to take Adalind and Diana to South America fall though. Instead of getting revised orders, Kelly brings them to Nick, not caring that her actions not only put Nick, but the scoobies in mortal danger.
Marie took care of Nick when he was a child, despite possible mortal danger to them both. She showed herself to be the better person of the two women because she sacrified and looked out for Nick. She came to him even though she was terminally ill. The same cannot be said of Kelly.
For some reason, because Kelly is Nick's biological mother, she's given all kinds of passes simply because she gave birth to him. Yet she shows absolutely no motherly skills at all. I get why everyone else went along with the plan to get Diana to some kind of perceived safety: They relied on Nick's trust in his mother.
Why Nick would trust such a woman is beyond me.
