IMO, Nick, at times, short changed himself plenty of times. Iinstead of clocking in detective work on some cases, he spent some of his own time doing police work. Something that probably contributed negatively to his relationship wth Juliette.
Very similar to the real world of law enforcement. I a not an expert on this, but I have been told, unofficially, Alcohol abuse, divorce, spousal abuse and infidelity runs higher with law enforcement people/families than average.
