He wanted Kelly from the 1st time he laid eyes on him, when he met Adalind, in her new office, at her old the law firm, that re-hired her. He wanted Kelly, so he could blackmail Nick for the Grimm Book, in case Nick wasn’t willing to join BC. Once Bonaparte realized, Nick was not going to play ball with BC and Co. Adalind had no other choice when she left her note to Nick.Bonaparte: Ah. I think it's great that you bring your son into the office like this. I lost both my parents at a young age, so you should spend all the time you can with him.
Adalind: I do. This is—
Bonaparte: Kelly.
Adalind: Did Mr. Berman tell you?
Bonaparte: There's a word for when you lose your parents. It's "orphan." And there is a word for when you lose your spouse. It's "widow" or "widower." There are many words for many things But there is no word for when you lose a child.
Adalind: What do you want?
Bonaparte: Your present relationship is very unhealthy for you and Kelly. Your future is with us, not with the Grimm. You need to make a decision by the end of the day. Hmm?
I suppose it could be construed either way. Bonaparte’s threat was about losing ‘a’ child. Was he referring to Kelly if Adalind didn’t bring him to the BC house with her, or, that she’d never see Diana again if she didn’t come to the BC house? Both?
Adalind: I can't take you away from your dad. I can't do that. I can't lose Diana again either. I can feel how badly she needs me.
Adalind’s tearful monologue with Kelly wasn’t a debate to take or leave him behind, she was debating taking him or not going. Diana pretending to be Renard issuing an ultimatum made the decision for her. But, if Adalind was tearful over going to the BC house with Kelly because Bonaparte demanded both of them, there wouldn’t be anything to debate.
Was Bonaparte expecting Kelly and planning to use him to bait Nick or did Adalind bringing him provide an unplanned opportunity for Bonaparte to use Kelly to his advantage? Bonaparte and Rachael only talked to Renard about the importance of a perfect-family image, which is why they needed to get Diana from HW and convince Adalind to join them. They never mentioned Renard claiming Kelly as his. Renard wasn’t expecting Adalind to bring Kelly and voiced his surprise when they arrived.
So after all this back and forth with myself, either interpretation is reasonable. *grin*
