I have no idea if this is true but it does show David with a staff.
Now if Joseph-Marie-Augustin-Ferrier for my point of view was a Grimm who knew about the prophecy painted this as a clue for a later Grimm to find. Not to say that the staff in the painting was meant to be connected to the Bible in anyway but was to be connected to the cloth and the prophecy on the cloth.
That a stick was part of a larger staff for use by Grimm's, and that the last part couldn't cross into his land. This forced him to come for it and in doing so he could be destroyed.
So in this light the prophecy wasn't about this world being destroyed but how to destroy him. Think of Harry Potter the Dark Lord help create the one person who would destroy him.
It is true, the boy David was a shepherd, and would have a shepherd's staff. I looked at the picture, trying to view it as a portal that could reveal a prophecy. There are no special symbols anywhere in the picture, and even the staff itself seems nondescript.
However, I did some further research in the internet into a weapon known as a staff sling, which could have easily been the weapon David used to kill Goliath. With such a weapon, David would have been able to hurl stones at a great distance. The stone that killed Goliath was imbedded in his skull, which could conceivably come from such a weapon. I know you weren't referencing the bible for this discussion, but I need to reference it because there is something that could give credence to your thought of a prophecy. David says:
“You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with la javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand.”
It was suggested that the shard Nick carried could be a piece of the True Cross. It was also suggested that the staff may have consisted of a part of Moses staff. These two items, like David's staff, would contain a great power, which the authors attributed to God. So you may be correct in your assessment that David's staff is a source of great power. I hope this makes sense.
I have to admit that I am not a Harry Potter fan. I've never read the books, and have only seen all of the movies once, with the exception of the Deathly Hallows. I like those movies, but I only watch them for their entertainment value.
