Robyn, unlike you I didn’t find Renard that complex I always considerd him a villain who helped Nick and showed compassion only when it benefited him in the long run. He was just good at hiding his villainy behind a vial and prenteded like he had redeeming qualities when he really didn’t at all.
In season 1 he was basically the city’s version of mob boss/ corrupt police official and had a number of illegal rackets going which made him money. Then when the rackets got to much heat from the police he shut them down and killed anyone who could be tied back to him like he did with Wesen gladiator racket of season 1.
He uses his power over a Mother and daughter to get them to do his dirty work and also sleeps with both of them turning them against each other. Renard then disregards the daughter when she loses her usefulness to him when she fails to get nicks key. Then when he discovers Katherine is dead shows zero emotion or concern remember this is a woman he has know for years and has been intimate with yet feels nothing at her hearing of her death.
In seasons 2 and 3 he plays Nick and the gang and resstiance into thinking he’s helping him when he’s really just helping himself get more power. He orders the murder of his own brother Eric and shows no regret about having to murder his own blood revltives.
In season 3 after promising Adalind he will look after her and Diania helps to steal Diania along with Kelly Nick and the gang. Then yes finally he does seem to show some emotion as he appears to feel genuinely sorry for Adalind. Then in season 4 goes and ruins all that by treating Adalind and Juliette like garbage. He sleeps with Juliette his detectives girlfriend after pretending to help her deal with becoming a hexenbiest but really he just needs her to open a book for him. Then after she opens the book his shags her and sends her to Murder the mother of his first child. He then discovers he has been possessed by Jack the Ripper and has been on a murder spree across Portland and yes shows some concern for his murder victims but is really more interested in finding someone to frame to save his own ass.
That’s Renards story the first 4 seasons and yes he shows some compassion and at times slight remorse but really I would still class him as a villain.
In season 5 and season 6 though he becomes a truly unredemable villain as he becomes a terroist, a man who is willing to work with Black Claw to kill thousands of innocent humans. He tells Nick in 5x20 that humans have run the world for too long he’s admits that Black Claw world will be more violent and primitive but claims that’s what the world needs, he appears to have fully bought into a nazi like Wesen ideology.
I really don’t understand how any one can see Renard as in any way redeemable I find him to be a disgusting sociopath who cares about no one or nothing. Except maybe his daughter and even Sasha Roiz admits himself that while Renard does care for his daughter he sees he more as a weapon and a political tool.
