Adalind is the cast character with a history of money issues. If Adalind had left the hospital to live in a homeless shelter(which was the plan without the scooby gang) until the baby was old enough for daycare what do you Nick would have done?
IMO Nick should have had grounds rule and limits for Adalind but helping her out after she had no money, a the c section with a new born make sense to me.

As we saw in the show, Nick's enemies can take baby Kelly and use that against Nick. Adalind, the baby and later Diana should have been part of Nick's security plan but as an example he could have put them on another floor even if Adalind complained.
Diana is important to Nick too since his mother used to care for her.
Women characters do not have to be having sex with the lead to be important to the story.
