Just a random internet tangent. On IMDB, about half the posts (whether it be for Grimm or any other show such as OUAT) are about fans whining about reruns on alternate weeks. The other half whine when there are extended hiatuses (three weeks or more) without new episodes. I'm guessing the producers listened to the ones who hated alternate week reruns and went with the hiatus, even though it makes a really big problem for guest stars. I wouldn't be surprised that's one reason we didn't see Nick's mom again last season.
Though, the hiatus was more likely caused by beginning the Grimm season in August rather than September. Shows usually want to end filming around April in case the show gets cancelled. That gives the writers/producers time to wrap up the series. That's difficult to do when shooting begins a month earlier than usual.
In any case, all fans who praised the hiatus should eat crow (well, unless they didn't like Eric Renard, then they can brag).
