Detective is not a rank, it's a classification. A detective can have the rank of officer, sergeant or lieutenant.
In real life, Nick introducing himself as "Detective Burkhardt" would mean he has the same rank as a uniformed Officer. If he had a higher rank, he'd sat "Sgt Burkhardt" or "Lieutenant Burkhardt." The fact that he's in plain clothes and conducting investigations would make it unnecessary to say he was a detective.
