There goes one classy dame.
I actually do watch a lot of older movies, including film noir -- thanks, TCM -- so I've always thought Bacall was a memorable actress. That dark voice, the delivery, those looks. Classic Hollywood. And no one can beat that chemistry she had with Bogart -- although the friendly chemistry of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland comes pretty close in terms of acting duos.
One of my favorite lines from To Have and Have Not was hers, where she says, "I'm hard to get, Steve. All you have to do is ask."
Dang.
Noir dialogue is the best dialogue, but if I were to make a movie recommendation for those new to old films, I'll put my money on the Thin Man series with Nick and Nora. A married couple act as PIs and it's comedy. Also, The Third Man. Not as overexposed as Citizen Kane is, and a must-see noir flick with unforgettable cinematography and a distinctive soundtrack. Okay, one more, last one, promise: The Night of the Hunter directed by Charles Laughton. Only movie he directed and the only version anyone should watch.
