I've never taken physics in school, so I had to peruse the internet to get some understanding of negative energy. The scientists will still be laughing at my ignorance.
Do you believe that this barrier was negative energy? I'm real skeptical about this, but I have no working knowledge of physics so I could be way out past the barrier with my thinking. The way I understand negative energy is that it is the attraction of two objects in without any external attraction, like gravity, to bring them together. There have been experiments where two metal plates in a vacuum were placed close one another without touching. The two plates are attracted to one another by negative energy and they will move close enough to touch. Space is pretty close to a vacuum, so there's no doubt of dark energy within it. How anyone would go about measuring it or even finding an example out there to study, is still way beyond our capabilities.
So the barrier has been called negative energy. How novel of Gene Roddenberry. He was probably doing a little Star Trek winkie to the scientific consultants during "The Immunity Syndrome." Okay, the joke's on the viewers, we get it.
I was thinking about this barrier and wondering how this could be negative energy. First of all, it can be seen. Not that that's proof of anything, but one of the issues in even proving negative energy is that it cannot be seen. Still way beyond our capabilities. Second, it generates a powerful charge to any object and human that enters it. Third the Enterprise was not attracted to the barrier, nor was it attracted to the ship. Interaction did not occur until the Enterprise entered the barrier.

The best way to frustrate a cyberbully is to ignore him.
