I'm going from vague memory here, but IIRC, Marty begins as a typical teenager with a potentially promising future as a musician and his slide into loserdom begins with a drag race where he crashes into a limo and as a result can no longer play. In the final movie he chooses not to race, which resets him back to the potentially promising future. Plus, having put himself on the line in several dangerous situations, he's presumably gained maturity.
The Back to the Future movies are, of course, comedies, so it's probably best not to devote a lot of time or thought to their science fiction plausibility.
I'm pretty sure I saw Frequency once, but I really don't have any memory of it at all.
