I don't have the science background, so I am floundering here. I have no idea what could even work as an antenna on planets that have little to no life.
It's Spock's doing, all the way. Kirk was very wish washy at this point, even admitting he forgot that the boss is supposed to be invulnerable and perfect. (I imagine Shatner was probably inwardly cringing at those lines. He loved to ham it up about the imperfections of humanity).
I'm still trying to figure out how lying to the crew reinforces that perfect and invulnerable image. In fact, I'm trying to figure out how Kirk A could even consider telling an untruth. That is more along Kirk B's style.
