I suspect that fact that Cochrane originally flew off into space intending to die may have made a difference in his reactions. Fatalism and resignation are probably not characteristics of feral animals.
As for whether the kidnapping thing had been done before, I do have to wonder if it really took Cochrane 150 years to think of communicating his feeling of loneliness to the Companion. Maybe the reason he didn't want the galaxy coming to honor him is that there's a space ship graveyard somewhere on the planet from all his previous attempts...
