She got kicked out from home, lost her powers, her mother was killed, her daughter was kidnapped, and until late season 4, she only surrounded herself with people she couldn't trust. Despite all of this, she didn’t break, she managed to get her powers back, be a thorn in the side for Renard and Nick, and manipulate people to achieve her goals on both sides of "the conflict" (Renard/the royals/scoobies). Turning to others when she needed help was not a sign of weakness, but intelligence.
Smart? She was a little naïve, but smart. Book smart, but she also had a lot of hexenbiest- knowledge. Both Roselee, Renard and Eve turned to Adalind for help on these issues.
Independent? Absolutely. Up to late season 4, she was always shifting alliances to her own benefit. When Adalind turned to Nick, that was initially only to survive. But after she got to know Nick and started a relationship with him, staying at loft was her choose. She went back to work and got her powers back, she had the opportunity to be first lady of the city, but chose instead what she wanted: A life with the Grimm she loved and her kids. In the end, the people who had made her life miserable (and was still alive) could only observe from the sideline that she got her “happy ending”.
That’s what I call a strong, smart and independent character.

I guess I wasn't the only one paying attention to the whole show and its characters.
