My initial thought was Nick couldn't let go of the staff. I get the feeling that the wheels were in motion and wouldn't stop until Nick reached his destination. It already what Nick wanted and it gave it to him in a better way than he had imagined.
I think Nick always had a choice. Nick's choice was to go with the staff or let it go and begin a different life. Nick made it plain that he did not want to go into the vortex. If, as speculated, the staff is responding to Nick's desires, then the vortex should have disappeared at that point. Instead, it ignored his desires and pulled him in.
Is the true purpose of the staff is to fulfill Nick's desires or is the staff using Nick as a tool to fulfill its desires?
The best way to frustrate a cyberbully is to ignore him.
