When his son asks him about how Adalind died, you know what Nick can tell him? She died helping to save the world. I very much doubt his son is going to hate Nick over something like that.

No. My argument is that Nick planned to bring everyone back with the staff (just like Truble) and that’s why he fought to not give it up. My argument is that he didn’t know he would be sucked in to the portal until it was too late. In addition, which is not relevant to this question, the staff had such enormous powers that it would have brought Nick back whatever he did. It responded to his deep desire to get everyone back. If it could reset time, it surly could transport a Grimm. But ok, I see that basis for your thinking. For a moment, I thought you meant Nick in the choice between letting them live or die should have actively chosen the last option.
