I think the idea was that the many historical/mythological figures carrying staffs of great power were basically the same staff being handed down or lost and rediscovered over and over again. Which begs the question of whether all of them drew their power from this mysterious staff of unknown origin, or was the staff just a big stick that become what it was because of all the powerful figures who had possessed it through the ages?
As far as Nick needing to lose everyone and be at the end of his rope to find his "hidden strength," I figure the fact that his Aunt Marie never showed up before then is probably a tell.
