But this was not a zero game where Nick finally corrected the damage from when the portal was opened the first time. The killings were necessary!
When Nick walked through the mirror, he didn’t know that the stick would not follow through. He believed that it would help him defeat Z and bring him back. In fact, nobody knew that the portal closed when they passed. How could they?
The first sentence in your second paragraph speaks volumes. You act as though Nick's ignorance was just some minor setback. It was not. It was a huge mistake brought on as the result of irrational thinking.
I get that Eve was in hell, or whatever the other world was, and so you say Nick didn't have a choice. He did. Monroe and Rosalee were trying to get him to think about the consequences of a rash judgment by going into the portal unprepared. Nick chose not to listen.

She said she didn't want to be rescued. Since when does that translate to, "sure glad you came, Nick. Let's get the hell out of here"?

Yes we do. Diana brought them back.

This allowed Nick to find his inner strength and defeat Z. And do not say Z would have remained in the "other place", because he had terrorized Eve and the others by showing up in mirrors and would continued until Nick was lured over. Had Nick not followed, Eve would have died, Nick won’t been able to remove Adalind’s ring, defeat Z and gain access to the staff.
I thought the whole point was that Nick couldn't defeat the Z on his own. Instead he needed the power of the grimms, so that's the reason the family made an appearance.

What powers do you think it gave him?

So no, it didn’t end in failure!
Whether Eve lived or died was not an element that would compromise the prophecy. Eve would have gladly given her life if keeping Z occupied would give the scoobies time to come up with a decent plan.
* Diana led them back through the mirror the first time, but where were they really? This has been debated ever since last episode. I thought you were familiar with this issue...
(Hint: where did they come from next time?).
* I don’t think anything about his new powers, I quoted the Grimm book. He got Z's powers - he got the Staff......
* The power of the grimms was his inner strength. Kelly: “We helped you find your strength..[...]....The strength of your blood, the blood of your Grimm ancestors, all of us it's inside you".
* And the fact that the others had to die for Nick to find his strength have been highlighted by the writers many times.
By the way, I updated my post with some humor when you where typing your reply.
