Nick did not die, and if you can not see why it's right to save someone's life, I can not help you.
This was predicted all the way back in 1598. But the outcome was not given. Nick saved the day and only Diana knew what happened. So, it’s reasonable to believe that they had a special relationship afterwards. The 20 years later section also indicates that this was the case.
