I see Kelly as a tragic figure who is obsessively pursuing a quest for some combination of revenge and absolution. She failed to protect the coins she was supposed to guard, her husband and friend were killed by those seeking the coins, and her son was so endangered that her older and more experienced sister told her that leaving him was the only way she had left to keep him safe. She spent the rest of her life looking for some heroic quest to accomplish that might atone for that, but never really found it.
