Do you also see these as a tale of fiction or do you actual see and understand the subtext. Is to kill a mockingbird social commentary or do you only see the court room drama.
It is amazing how you find it ridiculous to see past what is on the screen and see the message. All your comments are a critique of the dialog and action but little about the point being made. You seem to think the ability to see subtext and intent is in the realm of reading the writers mind.
Actually to understand meaning is about comprehension. It is on thing to read or listen to the words. It is another to understand what is being said.
When you did book reports did you report on what you read. Or did you report on what it means. Every one had to do a report on shakespeare. So did you explain what he meant or on what he said. Even with Rome and Juliet did you see it as a love story or did you see it as commentary on the social condition.
Do you even understand that the Grimm fairy tales where not stories but but a form of propaganda. The same with nursery rhymes. Both where not meant to be taken literally. It was meant for one to understand the message.
I don’t know what your profession is, as for me, I am a college drop out because I decided to get married the love of my life when she moved away with her family 1200 miles away. We were high school sweethearts and after passing the test of a long-distance relationship not dissipating, I decided to drop out of college and get a job and got married. Yea, I got married young.
My background has always been in the technical field. I started out as a copier tech in the field running around Manhattan for a few years. I ended up quitting that job because the company I was working for adapted a pay freeze for over a year because some high end company executive lost millions when the company invested and developed some new technology, yet, they had no clue how to use it. Ever hear of Ethernet, Windows Operating System or a Mouse? Yea, I am that flocking old. Yea, those investments resulted in me getting a pay freeze for something I had nothing to do with.
Eventually my ability to “FIX” technical issues went from Copiers, Mail Processors, Laser Printers, Personal Computers, Trading Systems, Networking and in the end, Telecommunications. My last position was as a field troubleshooter working on High Speed Internet services and multi-phone lines dial tone delivery.
Why am I telling you all this? All my life I spent resolving highly complicated technical issues. Let me tell you, my journey has been with constant changing technologies. Not just in the different various types but with constant learning the changing and improving technologies that got outdated in a few months. When I got home from the stress of working on complicated and constant changing technology. I did not look for complications. I had plenty issues at work to resolve. At home or at my leisure, I looked for simplicity in entertainment.
All this crap you talk about is all just pure speculation. Yea, I did all that book reporting and class discussions and all sort of analysis on fictional stories I had to read to meet my requirements when I had too. You go on mentioning all these literary geniuses like Shakespeare, Lewis, Tolkien and so on as the well-read persona you seem to be proud of. Great, knock yourself out. Do you know what is the simple definition of “Fiction”, in a “New York Minute”? it’s called “BULLSHIT”.
You remind me of, way back in the days, an interview of a rock star on the old rock station in NYC, WNEW. The DJ was interviewing this rocker on his latest top billboard hit and went on discussing the implication of the meaning of some of the passages in his song. He was questioning if they were based on his experiences and influences by others and whom and how they effected his lyrics and their meanings. The rocker simply replied. They didn’t mean nothing much. The lines were all he could think of that rhymed.
Did it ever occur to you that writing is not just a passion but a business? A way for some to earn a living? It is just another art form. If enough people buy into it, it becomes famous, if not, no one hears about them. If Shakespeare had more competition, back in his days and more traveling theatrical play troupes used other playwright’s materials. Would his writings have interpreted as much? Would his plays even appear on Start Trek?
Hey, I have enjoyed all the Tolkien adaptations Lord of the Rings movies with my kids as they were growing up. Between me and my daughter we own all the movies on DVD and still re-watch them occasionally, including the Hobbits prequels. Me as a history buff, don’t you think I see the relationship of the series of books he wrote to what was happening in his days that was such a major influence in his writings.
Jumping into Star Wars, don’t you think I see the relationships of “Storm Troopers” and their uniforms to the 30’s and 40’s Nazi regime? And, Yes, there is much more conceptual intent and meanings in all these fictional characters and story lines. In the end of the day, it is all “BULLSHIT”.
Life realities are complicated enough to spend time, thought ad energy to deal with or resolve. I will not waste it on fiction. Speculate all you want. You have no clue on why certain words and meanings were put down on paper because YOU, were not the one writing them or being influenced on what they were exposed to or how their experiences effected their writings, for you to get what they meant. You can speculate all you want. Do you know what the “New York Minute” meaning of the word “speculate” is? Guess, that’s not a question but the answer! Let me connect the dots for you. You are a great "Bullshit Guesser".
You know you are OLD, when you see the Slide Ruler you used in college selling in an ANTIQUE SHOP!!
