That's when America really began to be settled. Perhaps all 3 remaining keys were sent to the "New World" to get them as far away from the royal families as possible.
A very good theory. And if the old Grimm (Rollek, I think the name was) we met briefly knew to what family the other keys had been entrusted, he would have been able to trace the genealogy at least as far as Nick's maternal grandparents, and thence to Nick.
True, and speaking of genealogy, can any of our German members tell me if the name Rubel is German, or as I think more likely French? After all, its not mandatory that all of the original 7 grimm knights would be German. One or two could have been French or Czech, etc.
I'm not from Germany, but as far as I can tell with a little digging, the name Rubel seems to have a connection to Germany (though it's possibly of Hebrew origin too.) But since I have online sources at my disposal here, grain of salt.
It's not entirely implausible for people in the show to frequently have German surnames; the US has a large percentage of people with German ancestry (17 or 18 percent, iirc) thanks to separate immigration waves in the past. And things like adoption and interracial marriage pretty much ensure that not all the characters with German surnames need be white. But there is probably a certain point where it starts to be a little too coincidental. I don't know if we've reached that yet.
I believe Rubel is Jewish, probably Ashkenazi
Ah, neat. One of the websites I looked at did mention that Hebrew/Jewish origin as a possibility. I was interested to see if that was true.
