OK, during the second season Renard is speaking to Nick about the 'hidden whatever' and says that people have speculated that it may be fragments of the True Cross, the sword of Muhammed, or the secret of alchemy (the philosophers stone?). Whatever it is, the keys lead to it.
I'm going to stay with my 14 coins hypothesis.
7 grimm knights during the 4th crusade find the other 14 coins. Being grimms they understand the power of the coins, can resist that power, and know that others cannot.
So, what to do?
They decide to conceal them until such time as the coins can be destroyed by either them, or their descendents.
Hence, the 7 keys. The coins are hidden in the Black Forest, in a 7 lock box. Each knight retains a key and each key casing has a portion of a map leading to the coins for their descendents to use, if needed. The knights also leave an account of what occurred, of which only a fragment remains, and Nick has it.
Forward to today. The royals have managed to get their hands on 4 of the keys, Nicks' team has 2, and 1 is in the wind. Only Nick has a clue to what the 'hidden whatever' is.
Now, how do we progress from here?
Oh, and does anyone else think the above outline might be a good idea for a couple of prequel episodes?
