Hilfe von meiner deutschen Freunde - wfmyers1207 - 06-09-2014

I'm trying to get an accurate translation of an inscription on a building here in Cincinnati. The area where I live is called Over The Rhine (Uber den Rhein) because many German immigrants settled here.

Anyway, the inscription is: "Deutsche Gegenseitige Verlicherungs-Gesellschaft von Cincinnati". I can't get an accurate translation on-line. Danke!Smile

Gerne doch / I'm happy to help Big Grin
There must be a minor typo, it only makes sense as "Deutsche Gegenseitige Versicherungs-Gesellschaft von Cincinnati"
I would translate it this way "German two-way insurance association of Cincinnati".

Thank You. I probably did make a mistake. The sign is very old and faded.

I was able to do some more research with your help. It was the first office of the "German Mutual Insurance Association of Cincinnati" founded by a prominent immigrant, Heinrich Rattermann. He also was a writer and composer of operettas.

Thanks again for your help.Smile

You're welcome Smile

Perhaps the "s" looks like the one in this link:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langes_s
comparable English link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_s

then everyone could have taken it for an "l". Letters are simpler nowadays.

-edit-
I just deleted the twin-thread on this topic in the "lounge", I hope you don't mind.

Yes, that is where I made the mistake. The companies second, and much finer, office building is being restored as we speak, along with the 4 meter statue of "Germania" in a niche on the 2nd floor. Would you like me to send you a photo or two?

Thanks for the offer, I googelt it and got a pretty good impression of the "Germania Building" and the statue. Wow! This guy was driven by a kind of patriotism (or was it simply home-sickness?) which would be more than strange today for a German. Other times! Very interesting, thank you!

Both, really. Many of the people who settled here were leading German citizens who supported the Revolution of 1848. When it failed, they had to flee to the USA. So, there was a great deal of patriotism and home sickness among them.
