So, she concluded, her best chance of protecting the surviving people she cared about was to remain "dead" to everyone except Marie, go on the run and hunt down those responsible for Rhinebeck.

Kelly appeared to have arrived in Portland because she was trailing the four Schakals who had been responsible for the Rhinebeck attack. So yes, it apparently did take 20 years. It didn't appear that she had any intention of contacting Nick until she followed Kimura to Nick's house and saw that Nick was being attacked. So she was still "protecting" Nick by not leading her enemies to him, until they found him on their own and she had to jump into the fight and reveal herself.

Nick clearly disagreed with Kelly on all of this, and Kelly eventually told Nick that she regretted her decision. However, at the end of the multi-part episode, Kimura and his buddies were all dead but she still didn't seem to have altered her life at all. Maybe she still had a boatload of other enemies she'd picked up over the years. Or maybe after 20 years on the run/hunt she was just unable to change, settle down and become a mother again.

It seems a simpler solution would be to put Nick up for adoption.

It's not as simple as that because Kelly knew he might become a Grimm someday. She didn't know he would be a grown man when he awakened his sight so leaving him with someone who could relate to him was probably the best option or he'd end up with people who thought he was crazy and couldn't help him in any way.

In essence, Nick's mom did adopt him out. To her sister, another Grimm who could watch out for any sign of him getting "the gift."

"Simple"? Look what happened to Truble. No one she trusted was there to tell her about her "gift" when it arrived. Nick knew and trusted Marie, if he did not have a long history with her he probably would not have believed anything. "Oh great, not only am I going crazy but apparently it runs in the family"Sad

they could not know when or maybe never had it.

Um, Nick didn't get "the gift" until he was 30 years old.

The acquisition of "the gift" got retconned after the pilot. Originally, it got passed from one generation to the next when a Grimm died, but by the time Nick's mom showed up to tell him her story that idea had been abandoned and it was just something that happened seemingly at random, without the need for anyone else in the family to die.

It doesn't matter. Either way, Nick didn't have "the gift" when he was a child. If Kelly's intent was to never have contact with him again, a simpler option would have been to put him up for adoption.

And that would be better than having him raised by a family member because...?

Why place him with a family member who's already been established as having a bloodthirsty reputation?

In the "family business" that would probably have been considered a good thing rather than a problem.
