Christmas Music - irukandji - 12-06-2016

Well, tis the season and with it comes my usual rant regarding Christmas music. I thought I would bring this up to see if anyone has the same or similar issues that I do.

First of all, I love Christmas music and we have a radio station that plays continuous Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. So on the way to and from work, I listen to Christmas music. Tonight on the way home, I was listening to "Do You Hear What I Hear", which was just beautiful. My radio displays a crawler that tells the name of the song and who sings it. This particular version was by Whitney Houston. When I saw that, I was thinking, "uh oh, here it comes", and it did.

What started off as a very beautiful version of the song ended with a complete vocal mutilation which rendered the song virtually unrecognizable in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Whitney Houston has a great voice, but when she does this oooooeeeeeeee waaaaahhhh and shouts lyrics like, "SAID THE SHEPHERD BOY TO THE MIGHTY KING, HEY, DO YOU KNOW WHAT I KNOW.......wahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa, YEAH, MIGHTY KING.....", it completely ruins the experience for me.

I'm probably missing the point of this offkey shout/singing insert your own version into the mix, but I have to say, it makes me think these singers experience a massive brain fart, and so have completely forgotten the lyrics, the tune, the whole point of the song.

Anyone else have this issue with Christmas music?

This year I noted many stores that were not playing Christmas music, which made it a pretty easy decision for me to decide where to shop. If I get up to the register an employee Happy Holidays me, the get to unshop the cart.

As for music, I don't appreciate modifications.

I tend to stick with Bing Crosby, Mario Lanza, Nat King Cole, the Three Tenors, Eddy Arnold, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Jim Reeves. Outside of Mannheim Steamroller, I have not been a fan of too many of the newer interpretations. I am really appalled by some of the more adult themed Christmas songs that reminiscence about love and life gone wrong. A positive take on that is the following; it is one of my favorites, as follows:

When I still did radio, I did do a Christmas show in which I sang a few classics, mixed in with selections from the above. Sort of a bucket list item for me. it was well received and an interesting experience.

Merry Christmas, my dearest little JellyFish. I hope you get a couple of new, meaningful ornaments this year.

Yes I sang on the radio and a couple of charity benefits over the years. Call it a personal challenge. The charity being the people who sat their an d listened to me or did not turn the radio off : )
