I wonder how much of Nick's "decline" might actually have been crafted...
It's a awfully unlikely coincidence that Nick turns Grimm, his captain just happens to be wesen and a royal and the first wesen woge he sees just happens to be his captain's minion. It's not hard to imagine Renard discovering that a young PPB officer is the son and nephew of a pair of Grimm sisters (if Monroe had heard of Aunt Marie it's a sure bet that Renard would have), getting him assigned to his detail and mentoring him as he watched for signs of Grimmness to appear. And then once it did keep throwing him case after case involving wesen he'd never be able to deal with by the book because their woges would make conviction impossible or they'd try to kill him on sight. Nick's susceptibility to the idea of taking wesen cases off the books could have been the result of years of grooming.
