I don’t remember if Meisner was introduced in S1 or S2, just that it was prior to S3 and Adalind’s getting her Hexenbiest back pregnancy. I don’t recall Meisner being any different in strength & skill than he was in S5, but in S5 I noticed his no nonsense attitude was tapered to accommodate Nick & the others riding the fence on whether to join HW.
Nick’s strength & fighting skills only exist because he’s a Grimm. He can train to hone intuitive & physical responses for optimal benefit, but he doesn’t need to workout like Hank & Meisner to develop and maintain muscle mass and fighting techniques.
We’ve seen Meisner & Hank with their shirts off. And we’ve seen Nick with his shirt off. There’s really no comparing Hank & Meisner’s physique to Nick’s. If a Wesen didn’t know Nick was a Grimm, they wouldn’t think he was much of a threat.
That’s not intended as a putdown. It’s just the way it is. Nick doesn’t look like a mean, lean, fighting machine because he doesn’t have to in order to takedown Wesen. His strengths and skills exist purely because he’s a Grimm. It’s the same with Monroe. He doesn’t look like much of a fighter, but his Blutbad DNA make him much stronger than he looks. I consider Nick being a Grimm is much like Buffy being a slayer. Both these characters temporarily lost what makes them special, and both reverted to their pre-special strength.
Which is why I don’t understand: “Hank wasn't on the same level as Meisner which is why I don't mind him.” It’s no secret that I don’t particularly like Nick, but I still consider Nick as the Grimm, and don’t think he needs others to be downplayed so he’ll shine.
I’ve not put much thought into Nick vs. the muscled men on the show before, but now that I have, I have to give the creative team kudos for not airbrushing away Hank & Meisner’s physiques and fighting abilities or strategically hiding them behind props so that Nick will shine as the ultimate fighter. The show has allowed the central character/hero to shine in his own right.
