All reflective surfaces water, mirror, or polished stone/metal is considered a portal either to other worlds or planes, sometimes passage through the doors can take you to other places in the real world. It is an old belief and has made its way into literature since long before Shakespeare.
My thoughts exactly, whatever is possessing him must need to be near water to enter or exit. I cent remember if he was near something reflective every time he was possessed but at one point it overtook him as he was drinking a glass of water.
This also gives reason why (if it is the captain) Jack couldn't jump into him when Renard was first with Henrietta, instead he has to come back after Jack had a chance to enter when he got near something reflective.
It seems more than just a plot device for Jack to kill Henrietta. I think she was the biggest threat to Jack due to her arcane knowledge.
Spoiler :
As for the episode itself, I really liked this one, I thought it has had real impact and the most happening since Wesenriegn. I do agree that the thing with giving Juliette the only potion they had was stupid.
