There's lots to say about well thought out and placed tad bits of clues and gems in a plot to build up interest in a storyline and its climax. But is Grimm now just stretching it all out TOO MUCH???
Ever since last season, I find myself wishing for the "case" part of the episode to hurry the heck up so that we can get to the really good stuff in the episode, which is the character interactions and personal developments. While the cases do sometimes flow into the other Wesen storyline and the character's personal lives, lately they just seem like an annoying hurdle to get through just to see 3-7 minutes of the good storyline. (YES IN A 40 MINUTE EPISODE!)
The whole teasing of Rosalee's past and Renard's political affiliations is at a crawling pace and as of tonight's episode, "A Reptile Dysfunction" episode 8, is basically at the same point as it was in the first episodes of the season. Which just makes it a repetitive reminder without any forward movement. WHY? Are the writers holding off because they think it's good storytelling or are they simply filling in gaps?
At this point it is just frustrating and annoying to get small bits of information, very infrequently, with no real pay off. Move the story along while you still have the time! With Season 5 the ratings have been down and if this IS the last season, I will be so pissed that they wasted all the opportunities they had.
In today's entertainment environment story pacing is vital to keep a show fresh, current and interesting. Gone are the days of slow developments and keeping the great climax moments for season finales. With shows like The Blacklist, Blindspot, Dark Matter, The Walking Dead, ect., you have to make the audience eager to tune in. Frustrate them a little, make them excited, but do not frustrate them so much that you annoy them or make them wait until the season is over so they can marathon watch all the episodes.
STILL A LOYAL VIEWER, BUT NOW REALLY FRUSTRATED.
