I've read a few arguments here that Nick didn't seem to care about Adalind when she left him in season 5, and that all he was concerned about was getting back his son. Despite the fact that he did most often vocalise this longing to be reunited with his son to his friends and his friends seem to echo it as well, I did notice that there were certain clues as to how Nick really felt about Adalind. They were subtle but nevertheless they were there on screen, at least that was my impression. So here's a short list of those clues:
1) when Nick first confronts the Captain, he mentions the Captain taking Adalind and his son away from him, which would not make him Nick's 'friend'. The captain then taunts him about setting down with Adalind, as if they could ever be a normal couple.
2) his conversation with Truble showed that he believed Adalind when she wrote that she loved him and that she did what she had to do to protect him and her children. Which meant to me that he didn't blame her for what she did, even though he might have felt hurt by her actions. It also showed to me that he had feelings for her, otherwise why bring that up to Truble in the first place.
3) when Renard was shown on television thanking his supporters after winning the mayoral race, he then mentions the 'love of his life and mother of his children Adalind' . Theres a cut to the face of Nick in this particular scene and you could see him sort of catch his breath and his eyes grow more angrier and intense, upon hearing Renard say those words. Then we see Hank shake his head and look down, like he knows that hearing Renard say those words about Adalind was cutting Nick to his very core.
Feel free to add to the list if you can think of anything else.
