Adalind may seem self-centered on the show but that's not the party line. I don't think the writers see her that way any longer. She's meant to be a mother who cares deeply for her children and will do anything for them regardless of our individual perception of her character. It's similar to how she loves Nick and went to Renard partly to protect Nick even though there are logical flaws in that action. The writers had her outright state this and it doesn't matter what was shown or how we can poke holes in that logic. They're telling us what to think and not leaving it up to interpretation.
