The former is possible. The latter--it is canon that the Grimmness came from his mother's side of the family.
I have to disagree with you on that Elkhound. From Kelly's talk with Nick in the second season and from Nick's remarks about a "ressesive gene" in the last episode, I think that "Grimmness" is an ability that can pop up on either the female or male line of the family. Just saying.
Really hope we're not going to have an episode on "TV genetics" because those can be ... painful. Well, I guess as long as no one strays too far from Grimm-ness being a recessive gene, it shouldn't be too bad. But if it's recessive, it would have to be on his father's side of the family to -- oh look, I've gone cross-eyed. Hope it doesn't turn out to be the mess of "it's recessive but strongly present anyway gene" like the wonky, impossible genetics of wizarding population in Harry Potter (low-level population built on those with apparently recessive genes but wizards/witches are the typical outcome of any Muggle/wizarding couple; and that's not even mentioning the Squibs).
