Nick’s the hero, a modern Grimm, and use no more force than necessary. There are episodes where Nick clearly acts like a real Grimm, but perhaps most when he's “pushed against a corner”. As in last episode of season 5, when he strikes back at Black Claws attack at the loft. (He turns out to be immortal due to the magic stick, but still). As Bonaparte says when he arrives: “I underestimated you. I didn't think a Grimm could do this”.
It is pretty clear that Nick was never going to be the traditional Grimm. He was supposed to be above prejudice as shown by him having wesen friends, other wesen coming to trust him, and eventually having a family with a Hexenbiest.
I think Nick was shown as a character that had too much of a conscience to be a normal Grimm. He killed but I don't think he was meant to be seen as a murderer. The WotW format didn't usually allow for wesen he didn't kill to come back and haunt him since we didn't see or hear from them again. It was only longstanding characters like Adalind, Renard, and eventually Juliette that caused that large of a conflict.
It seems like Spring rose knows exactly what type of character Nick is but is frustrated with him for that reason and it's not an unpopular opinion.
